1976 Eisenhower Dollar

The 1976 Bicentennial Eisenhower Dollar was issued to commemorate the 200th anniversary of American independence and is one of the most recognizable modern U.S. commemorative circulation coins. Unlike the standard Eisenhower Dollar reverse, this special issue features a unique design celebrating the nation's Bicentennial.

The obverse features President Dwight D. Eisenhower, while the reverse, designed by Dennis R. Williams, depicts the Liberty Bell superimposed over the Moon, symbolizing both America's founding and its achievements in space exploration. All Bicentennial Eisenhower Dollars bear the dual date 1776–1976, regardless of when they were struck.

Historical Significance

To celebrate America's Bicentennial, the U.S. Mint redesigned the reverse of the quarter, half dollar, and dollar for 1975 and 1976. No Eisenhower Dollars dated 1975 were produced; instead, all Bicentennial dollars carry the dual date 1776–1976. The Liberty Bell and Moon reverse makes this one of the most distinctive designs in modern U.S. coinage.
