Historical Significance
To commemorate the 200th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, Congress authorized special reverse designs for the quarter, half dollar, and dollar. A nationwide design competition resulted in three distinctly American Bicentennial designs: Independence Hall on the Kennedy Half Dollar, Independence Hall superimposed with the Liberty Bell on the Eisenhower Dollar, and a Colonial drummer with a victory torch encircled by 13 stars on the Washington Quarter.
