1986 Statue of Liberty–Ellis Island Silver Dollar
Issued by the United States Mint in 1986, this commemorative silver dollar honors the 100th anniversary of the dedication of the Statue of Liberty and recognizes Ellis Island's historic role as a gateway for millions of immigrants arriving in the United States.
The obverse, designed by John Mercanti, features the Statue of Liberty in the foreground with the historic Ellis Island immigration center behind her and the inscription “ELLIS ISLAND – GATEWAY TO AMERICA.” The reverse, designed by Thomas D. Rogers Sr., depicts Liberty’s torch radiating light and incorporates words from Emma Lazarus’s famous poem The New Colossus.
Historical Significance
The Statue of Liberty was dedicated on October 28, 1886, after being presented by France to the United States as a symbol of liberty and friendship between the two nations. Nearby Ellis Island later became the nation’s principal federal immigration station, processing millions of immigrants between 1892 and 1954.
Congress authorized this commemorative coin as part of the Statue of Liberty Centennial coin program, which included a half dollar, silver dollar, and five-dollar gold coin. The program celebrated both the Statue of Liberty and the immigrant experience that became closely associated with it. The silver dollar's combination of Lady Liberty, Ellis Island, and the words of The New Colossus makes it a particularly recognizable tribute to American immigration history.
