Historical Significance

John Adams was one of the most influential figures of the American Revolution and the early United States. A Massachusetts lawyer and delegate to the Continental Congress, Adams became a prominent advocate for American independence and served on the committee charged with drafting the Declaration of Independence.

Following the Revolution, Adams represented the young United States abroad and later became the country’s first Vice President, serving under George Washington from 1789 to 1797. He was elected President in 1796 and served a single term as the nation’s second President.

Adams was also the father of John Quincy Adams, who became the sixth President of the United States, establishing the first father-and-son presidential legacy in American history.

The John Adams Presidential $1 Coin was released in 2007 as the second issue of the Presidential $1 Coin Program, immediately following the George Washington dollar. The series was created to commemorate former U.S. presidents in the order in which they served and introduced a distinctive format featuring presidential portraits on the obverse, the Statue of Liberty on the reverse, and important inscriptions along the coin’s edge.
