2007 Thomas Jefferson Presidential $1 Coin – 3rd President

Issued in 2007 as part of the United States Mint Presidential $1 Coin Program, this coin honors Thomas Jefferson, the third President of the United States, who served from 1801 to 1809. Jefferson was the third president featured in the series, following George Washington and John Adams.

Historical Significance

Thomas Jefferson is one of the central figures of the American founding. He was the principal author of the Declaration of Independence and later served as the nation’s third President. During his presidency, the United States completed the Louisiana Purchase in 1803, dramatically expanding the country’s territory, and Jefferson commissioned the Lewis and Clark Expedition to explore the newly acquired lands.

The Thomas Jefferson dollar was released into circulation on August 16, 2007, as the third issue of the Presidential $1 Coin Program. Authorized by the Presidential $1 Coin Act of 2005, the program honored former U.S. presidents in the order in which they served and initially released four different presidential designs each year.
