Historical Significance

Andrew Jackson was a military leader and politician whose career spanned the early decades of the United States. He became nationally prominent following his military service during the War of 1812, particularly the American victory at the Battle of New Orleans, and became widely known by the nickname “Old Hickory.” Before becoming President, Jackson also represented Tennessee in both the U.S. House of Representatives and U.S. Senate.

Jackson served as President from 1829 to 1837. His presidency was consequential and remains heavily debated by historians, encompassing major changes in American political participation and presidential power as well as the federal government’s forced removal of Native American peoples from their lands.

The Andrew Jackson Presidential $1 Coin was released on August 14, 2008, as the seventh coin in the Presidential $1 Coin Program. The series honored former U.S. presidents sequentially in the order in which they served.
