Historical Significance
John Quincy Adams was the son of John Adams, the second President of the United States, making the Adamses the first father and son to both serve as president. Before reaching the presidency, John Quincy Adams built a distinguished diplomatic career and served as Secretary of State under President James Monroe. In that role, he was closely involved in shaping American foreign policy, including the development of what became known as the Monroe Doctrine.
Adams served a single presidential term from 1825 to 1829. His public career, however, did not end with the presidency. He was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1830 and served there from 1831 until his death in 1848—making him the only former U.S. president to subsequently serve in the House. He became particularly known during this period for his opposition to slavery and his defense of the right to petition Congress.
The John Quincy Adams Presidential $1 Coin was released in 2008 as the sixth coin in the Presidential $1 Coin Program, following George Washington, John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, and James Monroe.
